Transportation in Chongqing
Chongqing features convenient water, land, and air transport facilities. There are more than 50 airlines leading to Nagoya, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Lhasa, and other places. It is the meeting place of the Chengyu (Chengdu-Chongqing), the Xiangyu Xianfan-Chongqing and Yuhuai (Chongqing-Huaihua) railroads. Chongqing is the best point to start a boat excursion and tour the world-famous Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.

Getting There

By Air
Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) has 58 domestic and foreign city connections while 70 foreign and domestic airlines operate scheduled flights to Chongqing. Except for Hohhot in Inner Mogolia, all the capital cities of China's provinces have connections to Chongqing. With flights between Chongqing and foreign cities such as Seoul, Tokyo, Nagoya, Bangkok, Munich, and Duesseldorf, tourists can easily reach Chongqing by plane.

To buy plane tickets, it's best to go to the ticket office at No.161, Zhong Shan San Road. They're open 7:30-8:00. Many hotels also offer a ticket booking service.

By Train
Chongqing Railway Station is the center of railway transportation in the Chongqing area. It is the juncture of three main national trunk lines: the Chuan-Qian Railroad (from Chongqing in the north to Guiyang in the south), the Cheng-Yu Railroad (from Chengdu in the west to Chongqing in the east) and the Xiang-Yu Railroad (from Xiangfan, Hubei in the east to Chongqing in the west). On these three lines, travelers can go to most cities in China, including Beijing (25 hours), Shanghai (39 hours), Xian (15 hours), and Chengdu (10 hours). Buy your tickets at the ticket offices at the railway station.

Now Chongqing is linked to other parts of the country through several railways and highways, including: Chongqing-Chengdu (Sichuan province) railway, Chongqing-Guiyang (Guizhou province) railway, Chongqing-Xiangfan (Hubei province) railway, Chongqing-Huaihua (Hunan province) railway, Chongqing-Suining (Sichuan province) express railway, Wanzhou-Yichang (Hubei province) railway (under construction), Chongqing-Lanzhou (Gansu province) railway (under construction),

By Ship
Chongqing is the biggest inland river port in western China. Historically, most of its transportation, especially to the eastern China is through the Yangtze River. At the junction of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, the Chongqing Chaotian Door Dock, is one of the busiest ports in China. Chongqing is the best starting point for a Yangtze River cruise. Taking a cruise ship from Chongqing down the Yangtze River to Wuhan or Yichang is now a popular tourist trip. Choose a deluxe cruise ship so that you can have a pleasant and memorable experience on the Yangtze River. There are four categories of boats: the star-rated boat, the foreign tourist boat, the domestic tourist boat, and the common passenger boat. See detailed Cruise Ship Info.

By Long Distance Bus
It is very convenient for the tourists to go out or come to Chongqing from the nearby cities by long distance buses. There are three long distance bus stations in the city. Now Chongqing is linked to other parts of the country through several highways: Chongqing-Chengdu highway, Chongqing-Wanxian highway, Chongqing-Guiyang highway.

Getting Around

Public City Bus
Transportation system in the metropolitan area is also under construction to fit modern standards. There are dozens of public bus and trolleybuses in the city.

Taxi
Due to the hilly geography and Yangtze river and Jialing river running through, unlike other cities, ground transportation in the city needs a considerable number of bridges and tunnels, which increases cost dramatically.

Cable Cab
One of the unique transportation in the city is the cable cab flying over the rivers. Recently, Chongqing metro system is completed and is in service starting June 2005.
