Transportation in Shangri-la
Getting There
By Air Shangri-La airport is one of the largest airport in the northwest of Yunnan. Now there are airlines from Zhongdian to Kunming, Chengdu, Lasha. Most tourists choose a fight from Kumming to Zhongdian. Two air planes fly to Shangri-La from Kunming everyday, taking tourists 55 minutes. Besides, every Tuesday and Sunday, there are planes to Chengdu and Lasha.
By Long Distance Bus Long distance bus is a main traffic tool for tourists to go to Diqing area which connects Dian, Chuan and Zang area. Therefore, it is convenient for tourists to go to the interest places by long distance buses. There are long distance buses to Kunming, Lijiang and Dali everyday.
Starting June 21, 2005, there is a sleeper bus from Xianggelila and Lhasa. It will take 4 days to reach Lhasa from Xianggelila and the ticket (without any permit) will cost 500 yuan. The bus runs through Xianggelila, Deqin, Mangkang, Zuogong, Bangda, Basu, Ranwu, Bomi, Linzhi, Gongbujiangda, and Lhasa. The Tibet permit office claimed (as of 2005-06-19) that they will not issue permits to foreigners who wish to take the bus. Thus, taking the bus puts foreigners at risk of getting fined in one of the cities along the way.
There are four buses running from Shangri-La to Deqin and Zhongdian bus station every day. They start on 7 :20, 8:20,9:20,12:00 respectively and tourists will spend about 6 hours in the buses. On the way visitors can appreciate the beautiful sceneries along the road, including Pana Sea, Jinsha River, Baimang Snow Mountain and so on.
Getting Around
Public City Bus One should pay one Yuan only as the fare for a ride. It is regretful that the bus lines are far from satisfaction as there is only one bus (No.3) can get to Songzanlin Monastery and none to other sightseeing spots.
Taxi In all there are 8 taxi services owning over 200 taxies. Traveling in the downtown during the day one should pay 5 Yuan without exception and in the evening (23:00- 6:00) 10Yuan. When getting to the airport one should pay 15 Yuan.
