Diqing stands in a high altitude area which is 3300 meters above the sea level. The annual average temperature here is 5.4 C while the absolute lowest temperature is -27.4 C. Every nationality has different festivals. There is a great majority Tibetans in Diqing area, resulting in festivals of Tibetans account for most in ethnic festivals.
Tibetan Horse Racing Fair Also named God Horse Festival, it is ceremoniously held on WufengMountain in Shangri-laCounty, Diqing which is 3288meters above the sea level in Zhongdian every year on May 5th by the lunar Calendar by Tibetans. During the festival, every Tibetan household leaves for the meadow, put up tents at the feet of mountains and prepare abundant picnics to entertain guests. When the festival begins, they will appreciate the splendid competition which excellent horsemen from different villages in the county are joining in. Items for competition include traditional Tibetan games as horse racing, horsemanship race, and Hada-picking race and so on. Besides horse racing, people can watch various art performances, jumping Guozhang, jumping Xianzi and Reba dancing, for example.
Dengba Festival As one of the festivals that have strong flavors in Niru Tibetans, Dengba Festival is held on July 15th by the lunar Calendar. On that day, people in rich dresses hold a ceremony to offer sacrifices to the mountain divinities, immortal cave and Yumani Sutra to pray for an abundant harvest of all food crops and the domestic animals are all thriving.
February 8th by The Lunar Calendar As the liveliest festival of Naxi nationality, tens of thousands of people far and near go to Baishui Tableland to take part in it. People will kill chickens as the sacrificial offerings to the God and different divinities, and give performance of singing and dancing.
Torch Festival On the night of 24th of the 6th lunar month, the Yi, Bai, Naxi, Lahu, Hani, Blang, Lisu, Primi, and Jino people light up torches and line up for a parade, lusheng (a local reed-pipe wind instrument) and yueqin ( a local stringed instrument) performances, singing, and dancing, as well as such games as wrestling, bullfight, archery, and horse racing.
