Qiandongnan Miao & Dong Autonomous Prefecture (Called Qiandongnan in Chinese)is located in the southeast part of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, The prefecture adjoins Hunan Province to the east, Guangxi Autonomous Region to the south, and Zhunyi and Tongren prefectures of Guizhou to the north.
The prefecture administrates a city (Kaili, the capital) and 15 counties with a population of 427.3 million, 80.7% of which are minority people. It is home to 38 minority groups, including Miao, Dong, Han, Buyi, Shui, Yao, Zhuang, Tujia nationalities. The Yao People is the largest groups.
It has been named by the United Nations as "a famous resort to return to nature" and is known as "the last ballad of the human kind and the homeland for the exhausted souls". Despite the intractable problems of getting there, Southeast Guizhou is no doubt to be an ideal area to experience the spectacularly distinctive folk-customs in every aspect of life and the picturesque limestone mountains.
Owing to the area of isolated communications and inconvenient transport with outside world, it has been poor and therefore the people retain a very traditional lifestyle. Planting crops for daily food, raising animals or even fishing and hunting for meat, hand making clothes, brewing for drinks are still an indispensable part of daily life. Industrialization seems to have left any trail in this part of China. To summarize, the lifestyle here can be regarded as a combination of the hairstyle of Tang Dynasty (618-907), the costumes of Song Dynasty (960-1279), and the customs of Wei (220-265) and Jin (265-420) periods. Each ethnic group has its own lifestyle and beliefs. Sometimes, even villages within the same ethnic group are quite different from their neighboring villages a few miles away.
The view that life in these villages will be boring is completely and definitely wrong because people here make funs on their own. The Dong People are renowned for singing, while the Miao people are especially adept at dancing. Actually, singing and dancing has fallen into the routine of their daily life. Luckily enough, one may see a really and truly high-class performance by the local people without any modern equipment – you won't believe your eyes or ears. Other interesting activities include Cock-fighting, bull-fighting, drinking rice wines, Tai Guanren (Carrying the Government Official in a Sedan Chair).
As to the accommodation, different ethnic groups have their own unique building style and architecture. Among many superb examples, the most two remarkable are wooden Drum Tower which is a unique example of ethnic architecture of the Dong ethnic group and can be seen at almost every Dong village in Southeast Guizhou. The other is Wind & Rain Bridge in the Dong villages.
