By Air
Kunming is one of the five major international airports in China. It operates 7 provincial routes and more than 40 domestic and international routes. The city has an international airport that offers direct and connecting flights to and from all over China and the rest of the world. Kunming airport is 3.9 kilometers from the city center. Here are eight civil airports in Yunnan apart from Kunming - Dali, Lijiang, Baoshan, Mangshi, Zhantong, Simao, and Xishuangbanna. Passengers can fly from Kunming to many major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Kunming International Airport (KMG) has flights from South-East Asian capitals like Bangkok and Singapore , as well as plenty of connections through China. A new airport, Lincang airport, is now under construction.
By Train
As the capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming is easily reachable over land by train.
The railways linking Kunming constitute the southwest part of the nation's network. With Kunming at the center, there are five major lines:
Guiyang-Kunming railway: An electrified railway linking Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province to Kunming
Chengdu-Kunming railway: Linking Chengdu, capital of Sichan to Kunming
Nanning-Kunming railway: An electrified rail line linking Nanning, capital of Guangxi Province, to Kunming; also the nearest line to the seaport
Guangtong-Dali railway: Linking Guangtong, on the Chengdu-Kunming line, with Dali
Kunming-Hekou railway: a narrow-gauge railway linking Kunming to Hekou
By Long Distance Bus
Yunnan has a total of 100,000 kilometers of highway; the third-largest road network in China. As the capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming is easily reachable over land by long-distance bus. These highways link Yunnan with other provinces and other countries. An expressway linking Kunming and Qujing has been put into operation.
The Kunming Central Bus Station, located on Beijing Road, southwest of Kunming Railway Station, is the largest bus depot in Yunnan. Over 500 buses leave this depot daily. There are various kinds of buses, including sleepers and luxury buses. Ticketing is computerized and tickets may be purchased up to one week ahead.

Getting Around
Public City Bus
There are over 50 bus lines that zigzag throughout almost every section in Kunming. It usually costs a mere 1 RMB to take a public bus and the last buses run until about 10 pm. For a list of the public bus lines and schedule, obtain the Kunming City Map at any news agent for 3.50 RMB. The public bus system is a convenient and cheap way to get around Kunming.
Taxi
Taxis are quite plentiful in Kunming - over 6000 taxis roam the city streets. Therefore, taxis are often the most convenient way to get around Kunming.
Taxi fare-charging standard: For standard cars, the fee is 1.6 yuan per kilometer with a base charge of seven yuan for the first three kilometers. For luxury cars, the fee is 1.8 yuan per kilometer with a base charge of eight yuan for the first three kilometers. The flag-fall of a mini taxi is 7 RMB for the first three kilometers and increases by 1.6 RMB for every kilometer thereafter.
Car Rental
It is possible for confident tourists with a healthier budget to rent a car in Kunming. Rental prices range from 120 - 300 RMB per day for a four-seat vehicle. It is wise to rent a car with a driver who can also serve as tour guide. This tip can save a great deal of money on the deposit, which is approximately 500 - 1000 RMB for a car with a driver, but increases to over 5000 RMB for a vehicle without one. oreigners must also have a Chinese driver's license to legally drive in China. Apparently international drivers's licenses are not acceptable.
Bicycle
Bicycles can be rented at most hostels and hotels for about 20 RMB a day.
