CHINA TOURS
Brief Introduction to Xishuangbanna
Situated in the deep southeast of Yunnan Province, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture has always been distinguished for its mysterious tropical rainforests, abundant wild animals, fascinating religious architectures and dazzling minority customs and traditions. Adjacent to the Burmese and Lao borders and neighbor on Thailand and Vietnam, it has an area of 20,000 square kilometers and a population of 8.4 million. The capital city is Jinghong, which straddles the Lancang (Mekong) river known as the "Danube in the East". The Six famous tea mountains region (literally, "Six big tea mountain") located in the prefecture produce some of the most highly regarded Pu-erh tea in the 20th century.

As one of the very few oases in China, Xishuangbanna is a land being a dream of global travelers for years, while the journey or adventure to this tropical paradise is time-consumed and at times difficult.

In the Dai language, Xishuangbanna means "Twelve districts of one thousand mu of rice fields each" referring to twelve administrative bodies ruled by twelve chieftains in the old days. Its old-time name given by the Dai people is Mengbanaxi and it literally means "an ideal and mysterious paradise". It is until the liberation of Xishuangbanna in February 1950 that peoples of the various nationalities really become the masters of their beautiful and affluent land.

As the only tropical rainforest nature reserve zone remaining around the Tropic of Cancer and one of the very few oases in China, Xishuangbanna is ideal for nurturing numerous wonderful plants and flora and home to rare wildlife in virtue of plentiful sunshine, an average temperature of 21 degrees C, and abundant rainfall. It is called "the kingdom of plants and animals" for good reason: there are over 5000 species of plants, and hundreds of rare birds and animals scattered among its 15,000 square kilometers of tropical rainforest. Old trees reach into the skies here, vines twist and gnarl together and in the evening, a thick fog penetrates the region, filling with it an air of mystery and curiosity. Only two seasons are in a year here, rainy season from May to October, and dry season from December to April which is golden time for recuperation and tourism. The coldest and the hottest month are January and June separately.

Dai people inhabited this miraculous land as early as in the Han Dynasty and now remain exciting and fascinating here. The distinctive natural environment here renders unusual customs and traditions. Even today, Dai houses can be found all over the region. These two-storey bamboo structures raised on stilts prevent floods and dangerous animals, and allow many people to live on the upper floor in one house safely and often house all their fowl and domestic animals on the ground floor. Hunting, in conjunction with farming is still the main income. At the mention of culture, the Dai people dress in spectacular colors and furs, and dance and song are popular ways to pass the time.

Due largely to the region's proximity to Burma and Thailand, Buddhism is the dominant religion here. Thus, temples and pagodas with a Southeast Asian flavor are dotted about the countryside and towns. However, monks, especially young male trainee boys, having assimilated common customs, clothed in traditional orange costume, using mobile phones and riding motorbikes to the temple, are common sights.

Now thanks to the quickly-developed tourism, visitors can enjoy this wonderland surrounded by lofty and ancient trees, colorful flowers and murmuring streams, enchanting Dai zu favor, solemn temples and pagodas and folk dance and other performances in local scenic spots in Xishuangbanna.
