Local Specialties and Souvenirs Xishuangbanna is the historic cradle of plant tea and is the homeland of the famous Puerh Tea, whose immense health benefits have been recognized in recent years. Puerh is harvested from old, large leaves, undergoing several unique processing steps, then stored underground to allow them to age properly, sometimes up to 50 years! As a prestigious tea in Yunnan Province, Puerh has been an article of tribute in past dynasties. Tourists can buy Puerh tea in all the native product stores in Xishuangbanna. Craftworks in the market of Xishuangbanna are in large quantities and dazzling varieties. Tourists can buy top-quality woodcarvings in this region, especially the Dai colored drawing one. The more heavily it weighs the better quality it is blessed with. Most of them are in the shape of elephant whose prices range between about 50 and 100. The Dai Tongba, namely satchel, is weaved by colored cotton threads of all kinds. It is about 30 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide. Flowers, birds, beasts and geometrical patterns are weaved into the front, back and side surfaces. The bottom of the bag is decorated with colorful fringes. With bright color, exquisite work and small shape, the Dai Tongba is endowed with a vivid ethnic feature. It is a souvenir in great favor by tourists. Flower bag, called Ma Guan in Dai language, is a toy used to express affection and for entertainment in an activity named Dui bao( throw a bag) originally. After being performed in the singing and dancing hall, it becomes a souvenir which enjoys tourists' favor. In Jinghong City, tourists with a showy Dai flower bag are found all around streets. Black pottery is a traditional folk handiwork in Dai minority region. Style unique and novel, carving fine and delicate, pattern simple and elegant, these artistic handicrafts are very popular with visitors. Various tropical fruits, jack fruit, banana, mango, pineapple, longan, lichee, passionflower, star fruit，dried plum，grapefruit, pawpaw, guava and so on, which are unusual attraction, are on sale all over streets. Jack fruit is the biggest fruit in Xishuangbanna, whose maximal weight is over 30 kilograms. Passionflower is one kind of granadilla, throwing off pleasant fragrance when it matures. It can clear heat, quench thirst, promote fluid and prevent sunstroke. Medicinal materials are made of a great number of rare plants growing in the tropical rainforest, among which, paleaceous named Qilin Jie as well, the top blood-activating drug, is the most famous. It is used to cure injuries, trauma, rheumatism, miscellaneous gynecological diseases and promote blood circulation by removing blood stasis. It is also the major material for a medicine named "Qi li san" (Anti-bruise Powder). Jewelry The minority people in Xishuangbanna are fond of silver decorations on their dresses. Traditional silver decorations with strong ethnic characteristic include hairpin, earring, chaplet, bracelet, armlet, plastron, anklet, finger ring, waistband and so forth. Most of them are forged by villager craftsmen. The demand of them exceeds supply greatly.
