CHINA TOURS
Transportation in Xishuangbanna

Getting There

By Air
Xishuangbanna Airport is 5 km south of Jinghong city, covering an area of 1647.67 mu. The Airport, including 4 aerodromes, is large enough to accommodate Boeing 737s and its 4000- square meter airport lounge can provide a pleasant environment for passengers. Since its operation from 1990, Xishuangbanna Airport has opened many civil flights to Kunming (50 minutes), Chengdu (2.5 hours), Shanghai (4.5 hours), Dali (one hour), Chongqing, Wuhan, Changsha, Guilin and Guangzhou and an international flight to Bangkok (2.5 hours).

Traveling to Xishuangbanna by air is becoming more popular and convenient and t here are daily flights connecting Xishuangbanna and Kunming.

The area also has air connections with Dali, Chengdu and even Bangkok. It costs approximately RMB15 and takes 20 minutes to travel from the airport to the town by taxi. The air ticketing office is on the intersection of Jingde Xi Lu and Mingzu Nan Lu.

Marine Transportation
Mohan Port is located on the very south point of Mengla County, is the earliest international port of Xishuangbanna, opened for booming frontier trade with Laos, the other side of border is Luang Namtha Province of Laos. Port is about 220 kilometers from Jinhong and  380 kilometers from Luangphrabang - the ancient Lao capital, a charming World Heritage City. International highway from Xishuangbanna to Bangkok through Mohan Port is to be finished soon, which will link China and South-East Asia together more closely.

By Long Distance Bus
Bus is still the main transport for local people to go far. There are more than 20 buses leaving for Kunming - the capital of Yunnan Province every day. As the road conditions get better and better, more and more people would like to take bus trip, because there are more nice views to see on the way, and it's not very slow, 10 hours may bring you from Jinghong to Kunming.  There are two bus stations in Jinghong, the biggest one is at 23 Mingzu Bei Lu (Tel:2123570), buses to other parts of Yunnan start here. The bus is relatively cheap and affords a fantastic (if slightly hair raising) experience. However, the buses are often delayed and a 14 hour trip has the potential to turn into a 24 hour hot and sweaty marathon in the summertime!

Fare will fluctuate during the spring festival.

Getting Around

Public City Bus
There are three lines in the Jinghong City which can get to all the scenic spots.

Taxi
The fee for taking Xiali taxi is RMB 5 while Santana is RMB 7. you can pay the taxi driver according to the taximeter.

Bicycle
It is a good choice to rent a bicycle to view around in Jinghong City. Some hotels provide bicycle-renting service and deposit is needed.

Boat
Mekong River is an increasingly important international passage way, which was opened as an international port in 2001. Down the river, famous Golden Triangle is only 350 kms away, and boat ride to Chiang Saen takes only 10 hours. As the international dredging project is approaching the end, Mekong is becoming more and more eye-catching in the Great Mekong Sub-region. Commercial cargo boats have been playing active roles on the this river for more than 20 years, it turn for tourism now.

Gulei is around 170 kilometers far from Jinghong City, a small town located right by the Mekong, also the last port of China on this international river. Across the river from Guanlei, it's the land of Myanmar,  30 kilometers down, it's Laos, 240 kilometers away, it's Chiang Saen of Thailand. Because of the permanent navigable water depth here, this port is especially busy in dry season when it's difficult to navigate up to Jinghong, boats will gather here, cargo will be distributed here, passengers will also leave or enter China here.
