Travel Tips in Xishuangbanna
 
Climate and Weather
 
Located in the south of the tropic of cancer, Xishuangbanna has a tropical monsoon climate and its mountainous area has a tropical monsoonal humid climate. With all-the-year-round warmth, abundant sunlight, a large quantity of heat and plentiful rain, Xishuangbanna is characterized by the fact that there is a long summer but without winter.
 
Xishuangbanna has only two seasons, rainy season and dry season. The former one lasts about 5 months from the last ten-day of May to the last ten-day of October; the latter lasts about 7 months from the last ten-day of October to the last ten-day of May of next year. Rainfall of the whole region is above 1200MM among which the rainfall in the rainy season accounts for 80% of the gross quantity.
 
The average temperature of the whole year ranges from 18°C to 22°C. From April to the last ten-day of October, temperature always keeps above 22°C, while the temperature slightly fluctuates between 12°C and 13°C from December to March of next year.
 
The weather in December is the coolest with an average temperature between 11.8℃ and 15.6℃.the extreme high temperature reaches to 41°C while the opposite is -4.5°C.
 
Snow is never seen in Xishuangbanna. Even if in January, the temperature is also high in the daytime and thus people can get through the winter just in a sweater. Meanwhile, thanks to the flourishing forest, the temperature in summer is not as hot as to make one fearful.
 
With a cool and pleasant weather, Xishuangbanna enjoys a reputation as a Promised Land far away from winter.
 
The optimum time for a trip to Xishuangbanna is from October to June of next year. It is advised to avoid the two golden weeks, namely May Day (1st May to 7th May) and National Day (1st October to 7th October), when most people in China enjoy a long holiday in which they can move around for traveling. Also Spring Festival in January or February should also be avoided since more and more family would rather to take a trip than stay at home as before.
 
Local Festivals and Folk Custom
 
Water-Splashing Festival
Among about a hundred minority festivals in Yunnan province, the Dai people's Water-splashing Festival,when all Dai people in Yunnan province celebrate the New Year, is the most unusual, influential and sweeping. It is held every year on April 15th or the third day of the New Year by Dai Calendar. The grandest festival is held in Jinghong County.
 
The days of the Water-Splashing Festival are filled with various activities: song and dance, dragon-boat racing, the launching of skyrockets, the flying of Kongming lanterns, throwing love-pouches, and parades and fairs. But Water splashing brings the festival to a climax, because water is the symbol of holiness, goodness and purity. On that day, People gather along the roadsides and in public parks and squares armed with buckets and basins of water or carrying squirt guns to drench each other in wishes for good luck and a happy new year. Uncountable sprays bloom in the air, symbolizing luck, health and happiness. The splashing between young people is added with sweet love. No matter in the downtown streets or square, zesty people with a bucket in hand chasing others are found all over. With the ablution and bless by water, the water-splashing festival creates a sea abound with joy.
 
Till now, the festival has evolved into a carnival celebrated by the masses and at the appointed time people from homeland and abroad splash water over each another for benediction.
 
Guan men Festival (the Birthday of Buddha) and Kai men Festival
The Dai people celebrate the Guan men Festival, namely the Birthday of Buddha,  on July 15th or September 15th by Dai Calendar every year. Kai men Festival is celebrated on October 15th or December 15th by Dai Calendar. On these two Festivals, Dai people will go to temples to hold grand activities named "Dan Fo", denoting food, flowers and money to Buddha and figures of Buddha.
 
Three months from July 15th to October 15th is a period for Guan men ("close the door") for the reason that people are busy both with farming and Buddhist ceremonies. Amorism, marriage and travel to a distant place are not allowed during this period. Not until the Kai men Festival do people begin to love, carry on marriage and go far away.
 
Ga tang pa Festival
It is the new year festival celebrated by Hani people from 2nd to 4th January.During the festivals, no matter they are young or old, men should make a peg-top by himself and go to an open field for a peg-top-playing competition.
 
Te mao ke Festival
As the new year festival of Te mao ke Minority, Te mao ke Festival is celebrated from February 6th to 8th by the lunar calendar. A grand ceremony, on which men play the drums and kill cows and women sing and dance, is held in the Kinuo stockaded village.
 
Pan King Festivals
Yao people will celebrate a grand festival named Pan King Festival on October 16th the birthday of Pan King, by the lunar calendar. People kill chicken and pigs, drink crusted wine, sing and dance through the night.
