Huangshan City is located at the southern part of Anhui Province, with Zhejiang Province to its east and Jianxi Province to its south. With an area of 9,823 square kilometers (3793 square miles), Huangshan City is about 15 times the size of Singapore. It consists of 3 districts and 4 counties.
Huangshan City has a long history and splendid cultures. Shexian and Yixian counties were established more than 2,000 years ago. In the Jin Dynasty (265-420) Huangshan City was called Xin'an Shire. Until the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the name was changed to Huizhou. The city was famous for Hui businessmen, Xin'an school of painting, Hui architecture, Hui carvings, Hui cuisine, Xin'an medicine, and Hui opera.

Mt. Huangshan Scenic Spot is famous for its marvelous and brilliant scenery. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. It covers an area of 1,200 square kilometers (463 square miles) with a well developed scenic area of 154 square kilometers (60 square miles). The legendary pines, the fantastic rock peaks, phantasmagoric sea of clouds, hot springs have gained Huangshan the world famous reputation of the four unique views. Huangshan has brought together all the strong points other mountains have: grand, strange, baffling, arduous, steep, flourishing, quiet and spacious. The mountain offers a crowd of peaks. 72 of them have names indicating the shapes they resemble. Lotus, Brightness Apex and Celestial Capital are the three major ones, all rising above 1,800 meters.
Huangshan is abundant in biological resources. There are more than 1,500 kinds of vegetables distributing in the scenic area, of which trees comprise one third. The mountain also abounds in flowering plants and medicinal herbs. Furthermore, Maofeng tea is well known at home and abroad. The amount of wild animals is as many as more than one hundred.
Praises were heaped on Yellow Mountain (Mt.Huangshan) by famous men down through the ages. Xu Xiake, a famous traveler and geographer of Ming Dynasty, on his second visit to the Yellow Mountain, exclaimed: "Yellow Mountain (Mt.Huangshan) in Anhui has no equals. Once on top, one finds no other match. This is the acme!" People later concluded:" No mountain is worth visiting after a trip to the Five Sacred Mountains, and no Sacred Mountain is worth visiting after a trip to Yellow Mountain (Mt.Huangshan) ". No wonder it is the only mountain which is listed in China's Top Ten Scenic Spots and designated by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.
Apart from Yellow Mountain (Mt.Huangshan), Huangshan City offers many other tourist attractions: the UNESCO named and well-preserved ancient residence in Yixian County (Xidi and Hongcun villages, the film site of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), archways (the Tangyue Memorial Archway, in Shexian County), Tunxi Ancient Street, Taiping Lake, Mt. Jiuhua, one of the sacred Buddhist mountains, and Mt. Qiyun. Old houses, clan temples, ancient bridges and pagodas are abundant. Other attractions include Xin'an River, Guniu Mountain Nature Reserve and the sights of Tachuan in autumn are all worthwhile to visit.
