Folk Performances and Yu Opera

There are various folk performances such as the Yu Opera, the Drum Performance, the Dragon and Lion Dance, the Land Boat, the Chinese Kungfu in Luoyang, etc., among which the Yu Opera is the most famous.

Yu Opera, also called "Henan Clapper Opera" or "Henan High Tune", is a major local opera in Henan Province and enjoys nationwide popularity. There are four styles in Yu Opera: Xiangfu (from Xiangfu County), Yudong (East Henan), Yuxi (Western Henan) and Shahe (Shahe County). It is noted for its skill-demanding melodies, fluent tune, strong rhythm and intensive use of spoken language. Its simple and plain performance as well as its strong local flavor, always provokes the applause of the audience. There are more than 600 traditional plays in the repertoire of Yu Opera. Famous performers are Chang Xiangyu, Chen Suzhen, Cui Lantian, Gao Jie, Wei Yun and Ma Lin. When traveling in Luoyang, you can enjoy yourself in the Yu Opera in any theater.

Luoyang Opera deriving from ballad singings in Nanyang has developed through three stages. A new kind of opera appeared in the early period of the Republic of China.

High up on the list of the opera are The White-Haired Girl, Wang Gui and Li Xiangxiang, The Injustice Done to Dou .E, Luoyang Bridge, A Dream of Red Mansions, and The Legend of Peony.

Other Activities

The Chinese do somehow manage to enjoy themselves here though, satisfied by their versions of ultra-modern entertainment (some of which are blasphemously housed in a few of the ancient constructions). The Eight Immortals Palace on Luolong Lu is another replica of Disneyland (making use of the famous Chinese mythology featuring eight immortals), which applies modern laser and sound facilities to make entrants feel as if they were contemporaries of the immortals. The Laser shooting city on Shachang Xilu is another interesting place, a simulated battle field, like the real thing excepting that your enemy are either strangers or friends and that you use a laser rifle in place of a real one.
