Travel Tips in Zhangjiajie

Climate and Weather

Zhangjiajie has a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of 16.8C, and has 268 frost-free days. Annual rainfall averages 1,382mm.

The best tourist seasons include April and October. Never climb a mountain in a rainy day. The best time for viewing a mountain scene is one or two hours after rainfall. Looking down, one can see mountains shrouded by clouds and mists. Never climb a mountain when the weather is very hot, since it consumes too much energy and there is no place to hide from sunlight on the mountain top.

In summer, tourists are advised to bring sun block and insect repellent, sunglasses, and at least three sets of underwear and socks. Also bring tissues and anti-bacterial wipes. A pair of anti-bacterial wipes and a pair of anti-slippery sports shoes with thick soles are also necessary. Bring extra film, since it is expensive to buy locally. Bring medicated Band-Aids for wounds as well as anti-diarrhea tablets.

Local Festivals and Folk Custom

The annual Zhangjiajie Int'l Forest Festival is held on September 18th; the festival usually lasts for two or three days.

Zhangjiajie with its unmatched natural beauty is China's first state forest reserve. The Wulingyuan district in the reserve is of superb scientific and aesthetic value, where there are bounteous scenic spots, the ecology is well protected, and the forms of 3,103 quartzite pillars shimmering in an ocean of shifting mists. With a 97 percent forest cover, Zhangjiajie is home to a good variety of rare and precious animals.

Tour of forests, geological study tour, rafting the Maoyan River, international mountaineering invitational tournament, cliff mounting competitions, as well as art performances, qigong shows and cliff climbing stunts by local Tujia villagers will be arranged during the festival .
