Pana Sea, that is the Pana Sea Natural Protection Zone, is 5 kilometers away from the Zhongdian County, with a total area of 2153 hectares and an altitude of 3260 meter. Owing to thriving grass in the sea, it thus derives another name Grass Sea. The Zone became famous because a kind of rare black-neck crane which is in severe danger around the world live through the winter here.
It is a seasonal lake. Every summer, snow in around mountains melts and afterward flows into Pana Sea which Naqu River and Naizi River also inpour to, resulting in an enchanting view of green mountains encircling and clear lake water flowing with sparkling waves. When come to autumn, lake water flows out from night caves at the feet of mountains in Nixi and flows into Jinsha River. Autumn sky high and air brisk, Pana Sea turns into an alpine meadow, where a flock of yaks and Dian horses look for food leisurely and freely. Beside the lake, herds always dry mature green pear on shelves in the sun. As for nomads, it is a golden season in which the harmonious, quite, beautiful and plenteous highland sceneries are fully presented.
At the end of autumn and at the beginning of winter, black-neck crane, spotted-head wild goose and wild duck fly from remote north for hibernation, which thus brings about a world full of various birds. Among those lovely birds, black-neck crane is a rare species on the brink of extinction in the world and it belongs to national protected animals.
Tourists can rent horses to ride on the plateau meadow to enjoy the charming autumn scenery and experience life of nomads.
