Yuantong Temple is at the foot of the Luofeng Hill in the northern part of the city. With a history of more than 1200 years,it is the grandest and the largest and most active Buddhism temple in Kunming where the Yunnan Provincial and the city's Buddhism Commission are based. It is a destination of pilgrimage for pilgrims worldwide. In 1956, the temple held a tooth of the Buddha here for a short time. The ceremonies at which the tooth relic received and sent off were important events in the history of Yuantong Si.
The temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, with a history of over 1,200 years. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the temple was reconstructed and repaired for several times to the present size. The temple is now of the most important Buddhist temples under the state's special protection. The architecture of the temple buildings is rather typical, embodied all the essentials of Tang architecture.Contrary to other temples, which were built on an ascendant, you enter Yuantong Temple from above. The temple's great hall was at the lowest point of the temple.
The pavilion is furnished in an elegant manner and is invested with a tone of antiquity. Walking along a stone bridge from the Octagonal Pavilion the tourist will come to the "Daxon Temple". The roof-tree of the temple is entwined with two big dragons, carved with surpassing workmanship and showing a great vividness which affords the tourists a rare artistic pleasure.
In the temple are numerous scenic spots, and a pool reserved for setting captive fish free! (Fangshengchi). Yuantong Temple is one of the most important sites in the region for Buddhist ceremonies. On the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, people gather here to take part in all kinds of Buddhist services. There is also a good vegetarian restaurant on the premises serving lunch and dinner.
Yuantong Temple is grandeur, unique. Its brilliant appearance, grand building complex and tranquil surroundings have intoxicated generations of poets, painters who written poems, brushed scrolls about it. Yuantong temple is very popular among tourists and pilgrimages alike. Throngs swarm to the temple all year round. The temple is particularly crowded during the Qingming Festival, the first day and fifth day of each lunar month.
