Located on the northern shores of the Dian Lake, in the southwestern suburbs about 3 kilometers of Kunming City, The Grand View Park faces the rolling Taihua Mountains over the water. The park features blue water, long dikes and willow trees, flowers and lotus ponds and fish. There are buildings outside buildings and scenes within scenes. It boasts both the elegance of natural lake and hill and the beauty of ancient Chinese gardens. It is the most famous lakeside park around. In the park, flowers, vegetations, rocketries, pavilions, bridges, rivers are integrated harmoniously. Completed in 1690 during the Qing Dynasty, the park consists of hills, ponds, pavilions and rockeries in a style similar to that of the gardens of the Yangtze River Delta. The park was called for the well-know Grand View Pavilion in that park.
It is one of the most famous pavilions in China, which was first built in 1828 but the original building was destroyed during wars. The pavilion visitors see today were a repaired work conducted in 1883. It is a three-storyed elegant wooden architecture in ancient style. The Grand View Pavilion itself offers great views of Dian Lake. It is also inscribed with a 180 character poem describing the beauty and history of the area. This poem is the longest of its kind in Chinese literature. There are three stone pavilions in the lake in front of the tower, which were built following the sight Three Pool Reflecting the Moon in the West Lake.
On the night of The Mid-Autumn Festival it is customary for people in the town to flock here to enjoy the beauty of the moon and flowers. On that night one can see the lake shimmering like silver, the pavilion's flying cornices silhouetted against the star-lit sky, the trees and arbours looming in the shadows while the flowers are shedding their aroma in the moonlight. The pavilion itself is decorated with colorful illuminations. The whole place is indeed a most enchanting sight.
