The lake was so named for an ancient Dian tribe living in this area. It's reputed as "A Pearl on the Yungui Plateau". It is a highland lake, much treasured both in the light of Kunming's perennial spring weather and the splendid scenic beauty of the Lake District. Dian Lake (Dianchi), the sixth largest freshwater lake in China, also known as Kunming Lake or Kunming Pond (Kunmingchi), was formed by the subsidence of a fault zone. Formed as a result of geological faults and subsidence, the lake occupies an area of about 340 square kilometers. The picturesque lake, dotted with sails, appears green and boundless and shining with ripples.Surrounded by hills and crossed by streams, the lake basin is spread with thousands of acres of fertile fields reaching as far as the eye can see. Dian Lake is surrounded by hills on four sides with the Jinma Hill in the east, Biji Hill in the west, Heshan Hill in the south and (sheshan Hill) Snake Hill in the north. Besides, the whole district enjoys a greater prosperity of cultural life. Since olden times it has been a much frequented beauty spot, reputed as the "West Lake on the High- land." There are many leisure boats available for touring the lake. The area around the Dian Lake is clustered with sights of either beautiful scenery or rich cultural heritage. Along its 150 kilometers long winding bank, lie numerous scenic spots and historical sites such as the Grand View Pavilion, West Garden, Nanyun Nationalities Villages and the Lake Embankment.
