Rishengchang Draft Bank was established in 1823 and was the first draft bank in China. It is situated in the busiest section of Xi Da Jie, which used to be the First Street in the Qing Dynasty. The original site of Rishengchang occupied 2,324 square meters. The land used is arranged in a compact layout of buildings with definite functions. Although it was only a small compound, it was a forerunner of modern banking and once manipulated the economic lifelines of the whole Qing Dynasty in the 19th century. It specialized in payable bills, bills of exchange and money saving in China with a history of hundreds of years and branches scattered in 35 major cities all over the country. Its business even extended to North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. In mid-Qing dynasty, Rishengchang Draft bank had over 400 branches monopolizing the country's almost all the payable bills and bills of exchange ranging from state treasure, tax revenue, soldiers payment to commercial capital and private money. It became the mainstream draft bank in the corporate and finance entity in Shanxi, China.
