Opposite Wushan Hill, Yu Hill stands in the center of the city at an elevation of 58.6 m. Covering an area of 11.9 ha, it resembles a huge legendary turtle. According to the legend, a nomadic tribe name "Yu Yue" inhabited here in the Warring States period; hence, people named it "Yu Hill". The hill has been a popular resort since ancient time and numerous historic sites can be found here including White Pagoda in Ding Guang Tower Temple (White Pagoda Temple). The White pagoda stands on the western slope of the Yu Hill. Its original name was Ding Guang Ta (Pagoda of Eternal Brightness). It is 41 meters high, seventy-tiered and octagonal, and white in color, which accounts for its popular name. From either of the twin pagodas one can have a bird's eye view of Fuzhou city. The pagodas are a spectacular sight when they are illuminated all over with lamps on festivals.
