Xinhuan Village is one of the very old villages where people are dwelling in the mountain caves. Most of the families still live inside homes digged into the mountains, the kind of dwelling Chinese call "Yao Dong". In the recent years, people began to decorate their gate with bricks, and some rich people in the village would also built one of half cave and half brick house. Their bed for the night here is called "Kang" in Chinese, which also serves as the guest room during the day time where people could chat and dine. There is a fire tunnel connecting the "Kang" to the stove in the kitchen, so that the heat from the stove could warm up the "Kang". Each family has mostly three rooms with kitchen in the middle room. Villagers are very satisfied with their life in spite of the poverty we might feel about in contrast with our modern life. In Pingyao Ancient City are many traditional residences and commercial courtyards, 3797 of which are protected and more than 400 of which are intact. These traditional residences are the carriers of history culture, which are valuable for studying its history, folk customs, architecture, and art, and still serve as homes of local people. They become the architectural cultural heritage, which are protected and utilized today. The ancient residences not only reflect the level of ancient architecture and the fashion of residences of the time, but they also demonstrate ancient policies, economies, philosophies, ethics, art and customs. These old houses and ruined walls show people how the local people lived in years past. If you are capable of 30 minutes walking, you may get to see the 2000 year old cypress which could only be embraced by twelve people hand in hand.
