Baogong Memorial Temple
Must Sees Iron Pagoda Dragon Pavilion Baogong Memorial Temple Xiangguo Monastery City Wall Imperial Street of the Song Dynasty Qingming Park up the River Optional Attractions Yanqing Taoist Temple Yuwang Temple Located on the west bank of Baogong Lake, the Baogong Memorial Temple was built in 1984 to commemorate the respectable and morally lofty official Bao Zheng in the Northern Song Dynasty. Lord Bao was a Northern Song official well-known for his incorruptibility and uprightness. He was a judge renowned for his fairness in settling lawsuits and became a hero to generation after generation. Many of his heroic acts are depicted in Chinese operas and plays. The temple occupies a floorage of 1,800 sq. meters and consists of the Main Hall, the Second Hall, two subsidiary Halls on the east and west sides, Hall-wall Corridor, the stone stele pavilion and the main entrance, most of which were designed and built in typical Song style. In the center of the Main Hall stands a bronze statue of Lord Bao, three meters high, 2.5 tons in weigh, gives tourists a great impression of the revered hero. Like most temples in China, the layout contains several courtyards flanked with side halls. Artificial rocks, springs and pavilions were built to enhance the surrounding scenery. On the gable walls of the four sides are four large painted murals which mirror the significant achievements of Lord Bao. A rubbing of Lord Bao's stone carving statue lies in the second Hall. An inspiring poem written by Lord Bao which represents his idea and resolution about his official career is hung in the display cabinet. The family precepts drafted by Lord Bao is also shown in the display cabinet, saying that the offspring of his family, once found corrupted in the official posts should not be allowed to return to the family, should not be buried in the family ancestral cemetery and those who do not obey this will not be his offspring. In the east and west two subsidiary halls, the sculptures and pictures connected with the stories and tales about Bao Zheng are exhibited and the three copper cutters used to punish the convicted are also on display.
