Former Residence of Badashanren

Former Residence of Badashanren is in the southern suburb of Nanchang. The building was once a Taoist temple called Qingyunpu and legend says that 2,500 years ago Qiao, son of King Ling of the Zhou dynasty (1100-221BC) came here to seek a way to produce pills that would make him immortal.

The temple was named after Zhu Da, also known as Badashanren, a famous painter who specialized in free hand brush painting and was a descendant of the first emperor of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644AD). The painter moved here with his younger brother Zhu Qiuyue and they lived in seclusion for a number of years. Zhu Da had great influence on the famous eight painters of Yangzhou who were nicknamed the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. Works of Zhu and others painters can be found here.
