Qiongtai Academy of Classical Learning was one of the best academies in Qing Dynasty, it was built in 1705 to memorialize the famous scholar Qiu Jun in the Ming Dynasty. Qiu Jun was famous for his knowledge, poems and essays and was honored as "the four scholars in the south", together with Zhang Jiuling in the Tang Dynasty, Yu Qing and Cui Yuzhi in the Song Dynasty. Qiongtai is the assumed name of Qiu Jun, hence the academy's name. The academy is also the place where the well-known Yue Opera named "Searching the Academy" happened. A story goes that in the period of Yongzheng, a teacher in the academy named Xie Bao let a maligned maid and a scholar escape from the search of the peremptory local official. At last, the maid and the scholar got married and lived a happy life.
