Stanley, a coastal village on the southern side of Hong Kong Island, is a must-go place for most visitors to Hong Kong. Stanley used to be a small fishing village but in recent years, a series of restaurants and pubs have been established here, now this village is bustling with throngs of people. Stanley Market, located just up the road from the harbor, is known for its bargain clothes, souvenir T-shirts or inexpensive Chinese artifacts and household goods. Although these days prices are not as keen as they were, it's still fun to browse.

Even if you are not interested in the bargains, the market, with its beautiful scenery nearby, is worth visiting. At its western end stands the Tin Hau Temple, one of the oldest in Hong Kong. It was built in 1767, and during the First World War, villagers took asylum from war in this temple. Since then each year, on the 23rd of March, according to the lunar calendar, on the birthday of Tin Hau, people pour in to worship in this temple.

Around a kilometer to the south of the temple lies St Stephen's Beach, which is nicer than the more convenient Stanley Main Beach. Beyond St Stephen's Beach is Stanley Cemetery, containing the graves of many of those killed fighting the Japanese in the Second World War.

Other historic sites are found here including Murray House, the oldest example of Western architecture, Old Stanley Police Station, built in 1859, one of the oldest surviving police stations in Hong Kong.
