The Underwater Villages
The underwater Villages are situated to the east of Haikou City, about 40 km from the city center. There used to be a stream and 72 villages in this area. Later the villages suddenly declined into the sea in a very short time. A legend goes that it's the Dragon Emperor who burst into fury, flooded 72 villages in the nearby and made this area a mystery and attractive bay. In fact, the view was formed during an earthquake in 1605. A catastrophic earthquake attacked resulting in 72 villages submerged about 3 to 4 meters under the sea occupying an area of more than 100 sq km. Every May or June, if tourists go there on a boat, they would see dimly the villages of the ancient times sleeping quietly in the water. They are the only series of cultural relics that was declined and buried into the sea because of the power of earthquake.
