The Five-Pagoda Temple

The Five Pagoda Temple (Wuta si), located in the southern section of town, is a miniature temple built in classic Indian style, so named for the five four-sided pagodas that jut up from the rectangular base of the building. Built in 1732, the temple is 16 meters (52ft) high and is covered with glazed bricks.

Originally the temple was used by followers and monks as a steppe for relics and was, up until the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD), a part of a larger complex, the Ci Deng Temple (Ci deng si). This has now all but disappeared and nowadays the temple is surrounded by a large, dusty, concrete yard, and a number of small shops selling postcards, incense and various Buddhist oddities.

The temple was composed of three parts-the front, the middle and the rear. What we see now is the rear; a brick and stone Lamasery pagoda standing 16.5 meters high. There are various kinds of Buddha figures and scripts carved on the surface of the Pagoda. On the screen wall behind the pagoda are 3 liner carved pictures. The one in the center is mountain Xumi’s distribution map. The one to the right refers to "reincarnation into six kinds of beings" and the one to the left is the only astronomical map of more than 1,550 stars with explanation in Mongolian.

How to get Five Pagoda Temple: There are numerous ways to reach the temple. A taxi from most areas of town should cost no less than RMB10. The temple is just to the south of Renmin Park, southwards along Gongyuan xilu. From the city center, bus No.1 will also take you there.
