Lying 9 km to the south of the city, Zhaojun's tomb is a tomb tumulus with rammed clay 33 meters high. It occupies an area of 3.3 ha and is one of the remains for posterity to commemorate Wang Zhaojun, the lady of honor of the Han Dynasty, from 51-53 BC.
Concubine Wang Zhaojun is one of China's four historical beauties (along with Diao Chan, Xi Shi and Concubine Yang) who have contributed to political alliance and sacrifice. The leader of the Huns Nationality, Chanyu, went to Chang'an (the capital at that time, presently Xi'an) three times to ask to marry one of the princesses of the Han Dynasty. Emperor Yuan, ruler of the Han Dynasty at that time, married Wang Zhaojun to Chanyu in order to keep peace in the border area. After the marriage, Zhaojun made great contributions to the unity of Han and Huns. The story of Zhaojun's going beyond the Great Walls has since spread among the people. Zhaojun's tomb, a symbol of national unity, has become one of the eight historical scenic spots in Hohhot. In the summer time, it is lush and green here. Hence, it is also crowned as "A Tomb Covered with Green".
The pyramid-shaped mound is 98 feet-high and is crowned by a pavilion on its summit. From the pavilion the views are nice: of the grasslands, farms and the small park that surrounds the foot of the tomb. The park contains a couple of interesting features, a statue of the couple together on horseback, and a rose garden that within contains a museum that holds a couple of steles, and clothing (inc. shoes), jewels & books that allegedly belong to the deceased.
How to get Tomb of Wang Zhaojun: Take bus No.14 from the intersection of Shiyangqiao xilu and Nanchafang jie to its terminus at the tomb. Alternatively you can take a taxi or a long walk south down Tongdao nanjie, from the Great Mosque.
