Banpo Museum
The Neolithic Village of Banpo is a very nice example of the Yangshao Culture in the Neolithic Age. The remains of this village are located on the eastern bank of the Chanhe River and in the eastern suburb of Xian, about nine kilometers from the center of the city of Xi'an.

These were discovered accidentally in 1953. It is estimated that the village covered an area of 50,000 square meters. 5 excavations between 1953 and 1957 have unearthed about a fifth of the total village (about 10,000 square meters). In 1958 the onsite Banpo Museum was opened

In the Neolithic Age, the Banpo villagers lived on hunting, farming and fishing. Land was opened up by slashing and burning the surrounding vegetation. Women were responsible to collect the plants before the burning and in doing so they promoted the development of agriculture in the village. Women played a leading role in the tribe and the commune was called a Matriarchal Clan Community.

Pottery making became an important activity of the village and pottery products (dishes, vases, etc.) improved the daily life of the villagers. Archaeological findings have proved that this village was divided into three sections: living section, pottery-making section and burial section. The living section was the largest one in the village. At this site, archaeologists have discovered nearly 10,000 production tools or daily utensils of different kinds and the remains of 45 houses, 200 cellars, 6 pottery kilns, 174 adults' burial pits and 73 children's burial jars.
