In order to achieve the long term goal of comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable operations, Water Cube was closed for extensive renovations from October 15, 2009. The renovations are expected to be completed in June 2010, when the Water Cube will emerge with a new look, providing the public with more comprehensive and high-quality services.

After the renovation, the Water Cube will become a large, indoor multi-functional aquatic center, which can be applied in both holding international events and providing the public with aquatic sports events, fitness, culture and entertainment, tourism and other services.

Besides meeting the functional demands such as holding large-scale sporting events and cultural activities, the gymnasium will also provide more interesting activities for tourists to take part in.

According to organizers of National Aquatic Center, the renovations cover the following parts:

11,000 temporary seats and a platform will be dismantled, where a small north-south building that includes showrooms and fitness facilities will be constructed;
A 10,000-square-meter aquatic amusement park will be built. Upon its completion, it will be the most advanced aquatic amusement park in China;
The temporary facilities built for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be dismantled and garages and other support facilities will be restored according to previous design plans.
The operational capacity of the renovated Water Cube will be improved. According to sources, the Water Cube received 12,000 to 15,000 tourists per day during the past year, and held a large-scale activity every two or three days. Post-Olympic operations began to show results. The Water Cube, however, currently earns income mainly by selling tickets, and most of the tourists who visited the Water Cube are both from China and abroad. After renovation, the restaurant, amusement park, fitness and other facilities in the Water Cube will go into operation.
